Laurent Montalieu
FOUNDER
Laurent Montalieu’s journey is a blend of passion, precision, and a lifetime of expertise. Growing up in Guadeloupe and Bordeaux, Laurent didn’t initially set his sights on winemaking. While studying agricultural engineering at the Institute of Oenology in Bordeaux, he formed friendships with a group of viticulture students, drawn together by their shared love of skiing. Trading vineyard work for ski time, Laurent quickly discovered his true calling in the vines of Bordeaux.
In 1987, Laurent’s path led him to Oregon, where he began his winemaking career at Bridgeview Vineyards before joining WillaKenzie Estate in 1995 as a partner and head winemaker. He the founded Solena Estate Winery with Daniel Andrus, and. NW Wine Company in 2003 with John Niemeyer. Hyland Vineyard was purchased in 2007, and since then he has honed a unique style rooted in his commitment to crafting wines that express the unique terroi of the historic vineyard. Laurent’s approach prioritizes meticulous farming to cultivate fruit of the highest quality, producing wines celebrated for their balance, freshness, depth, and complexity.
