The Vineyard

Established in 1971 through the collaborative vision of four families—the Kreimeyers, Markleys, Welches, and Trenhailes—Hyland Vineyard spans over 200 acres, with approximately 185 acres under vine, making it one of Oregon's most historic and expansive vineyards.

Nestled on a south-facing bench at an elevation of 600 to 800 feet in the foothills of the Coastal Range within the McMinnville AVA, the vineyard benefits from cooler summer temperatures and warmer winters, fostering a longer, more consistent ripening period. The vines thrive in volcanic Jory soil, similar to the famed red earth of the Dundee Hills AVA. Among the plantings are old, self-rooted Pommard, Wädenswil, and Coury Pinot Noir vines, alongside Dijon 115 selections established in 1989. These diverse plantings offer a rich palette for blending exceptional wines.

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Hyland Estates. With a deep commitment to preserving the land, we practice biodynamic and organic farming methods, fostering a balanced ecosystem while producing remarkable wines. As proud stewards of this cherished vineyard, we are certified LIVE, Salmon-Safe, and Bee Friendly Farming, ensuring every step we take protects the environment, enhances biodiversity, and sustains the health of our soils for future generations.

Guided by our 'land, not hand' philosophy, we let the vines flourish naturally, allowing the vineyard to tell its own story—a story shaped by the land, the seasons, and over five decades of history. These quietly resilient vines produce wines of exceptional texture and maturity, each bottle a testament to the deep roots and enduring spirit of Hyland Vineyard. With every sip, nature’s influence shines through, offering a taste of this remarkable legacy.

Under the skilled artistry of Winemaker Anne Sery, the wines of Hyland Vineyard continue to evolve, maturing gracefully and eloquently expressing their unique character from vintage to vintage. These sophisticated, opulent wines embody the harmonious relationship between the vineyard and the winemaker, honoring both the land and the craft.

Hyland South by Block

In 1971, only a small group of pioneers understood the potential of growing wine grapes in northwestern Oregon. That year, four visionary couples purchased a perfectly positioned piece of remote terrain, once home to an orchard planted by early settlers, and began planting a vineyard. To honor the land’s history and preserve the integrity of its terroir, they chose to retain the settling family's name—a decision that gave rise to the Hyland Vineyard.

Hyland Middle by Block

The Hyland Vineyard boasts a diverse array of plantings, including Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Chardonnay, along with several Pinot Noir clones like Wädenswil, Pommard, Dijon 115, and the original Coury selections from 1971. The exceptional quality of the vineyard is evident, as each of these Pinot Noir clones are bottled as single-clone offerings under the Hyland Estates label. The goal of these wines is to showcase the historic clones of Hyland and their place in the top echelon of Oregon wine.

Acclaim for Hyland Estates

Hyland Estates has secured many 90+ ratings from leading wine publications such as Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate since the release of it's first few vintages in 2011. Some of these wines are available to taste at the Hyland Estates Tasting Room in Dundee, Oregon.

At the 1985 Burgundy Challenge in Paris, the world was STUNNED by a blind-tasting competition in which panelists were unable to differentiate between Pinot Noirs from Oregon and those of Burgundy’s Grand and Premier Crus.

The common denominator among these game-changing Oregon Pinots? They all sourced fruit from Hyland Vineyard. As one of the oldest vineyards in Oregon, it inspires expensive single-vineyard knockouts from some of Oregon’s most prestigious wineries, including Patricia Green Cellars and Penner-Ash. It has also supplied stars like Walter Scott, Beaux Frères, Antica Terra, and Bergström.

To this day, Hyland Vineyard continues to play a significant role in Oregon’s winemaking community, with fruit from its prized vines shared with nearly two dozen esteemed wineries across the Willamette Valley. This collaborative tradition highlights the vineyard's reputation for producing exceptional grapes that elevate wines throughout the region. Meanwhile, only about one-quarter of the vineyard’s harvest—carefully chosen from hand-selected blocks—goes into crafting Hyland Estates’ own wines. These blocks represent the pinnacle of the vineyard’s potential, producing wines that embody the unique character, complexity, and heritage of this historic site.
